Almeria Vom Steeg
Marriage and Family Therapist
Almeria is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who joined Hope Counseling Center in 2026. She has spent the last four years working as a clinician with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Almeria holds a B.A. in Communication Studies from UCSB, a M.A. in Communication from CSUN, and a M.A. in Clinical Psychology from UMass Global.
Almeria is passionate about relationships and views an individual’s challenges through a family systems lens - asking how an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are shaped by their family members as well as their friends, community, and the culture at large. She recognizes the value in a variety of therapeutic approaches and utilizes an integrated approach based on client need. When working with couples Almeria draws heavily on Gottman Method while also incorporating emotionally focused therapy principles and techniques. When working with individuals Almeria practices Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and Humanistic-Existential Therapy (balancing deep compassionate support with real-world empowerment).
Communication issues, conflict resolution, couples therapy, parenting, life challenges and transitions, anxiety, depression, anger, trauma/stress-related conditions, and behavioral and physical wellness are a focus of Almeria’s clinical practice.
Prior to becoming a psychotherapist Almeria taught Communication courses at Santa Barbara City College. She remains highly motivated to read, learn, and incorporate new practices into her work. She is particularly curious about how people change and embraces the necessity of a safe and secure space in which to build a trusting and empathic relationship with her clients.
Almeria and her husband Tim married in 1991 and raised their four adult sons in Santa Barbara. She is grateful for a shared love of time with the boys and a first grandson, travel, outdoor living, community, conversation, and their Australian Shepherd Cali.
